Frequently Asked Questions
What does a normal day on the team in Ethiopia look like?
While no two days look the same, you will spend 6-8 hours each day in the community, where you'll work with the families and friends that we serve. You’ll have the opportunity to spend multiple days in one location, and your trip activities will vary, according to the purpose of the trip.
How will I communicate, since I don’t speak the local language?
You’ll work 1:1 with an English-speaking translator from the area to help you connect with members of the community. Three Roots has established relationships with each translator through our 10 years working together, and they are truly part of our family. Team members consider the relationships with their translators to be a trip highlight!
When are trip meetings?
Teams will meet 3-4 times before leaving to prepare for the trip and get to know one another. These meetings are designed to give you all the information you need to be fully equipped for the experience, from logistical details to preparing for the time you will spend in the communities. The trip leader will create the schedule before the team is finalized.
Can my spouse and I both join the team? How about kids?
Yes; we encourage spouses to participate in volunteer trips together. At this time, we cannot accommodate children under 18 on trips.
How do I pay for my trip?
You will be responsible for covering the cost of the trip, which, depending on activities, ranges from $2500-3200. This can either be through fundraising or paying for the trip yourself, or a combination of the both. If you choose to fundraise, our team will help you set up an online donations page and provide support and fundraising ideas every step of the way.
What if I don’t raise enough money to cover the cost of the trip?
Each volunteer team will have a fundraising goal, and each member will contribute his or her portion towards this goal. Once the team goal is met, the trip will be fully funded.
What if the team raises more than the cost of the trip?
Any funds raised over the team’s trip costs will go towards our work to reduce poverty in our partner communities in Ethiopia.
Is the trip safe?
The safety of team members and staff is our number one priority, and we have extensive measures in place to protect your safety and security. We have been traveling to our partner communities in Ethiopia for over ten years, developing very strong, supportive relationships on the ground where we will be working. Ethiopia is a large, stable country, and there is no known danger in our current project areas. The team will fly into and have its home base near Addis Ababa, the capital city located in the center of the country. We will not be traveling anywhere near the border areas. As with any international travel, safety is not guaranteed, but we takes extreme care to protect team member and staff safety.
