Education transforms lives.
Without your help, this school will close its doors on January 1, 2017.
Your $20.00 gift each month will keep the school open
and educate 5 children for an entire year.
Will you save the school?
Imagine going to school each day with no textbooks, no school supplies, no running water, and no electricity. You’ve just walked an hour, and now you’re sitting in a classroom with 70 other students. Half of your classmates won’t pass the critical 8th grade exam required to enter high school. Now imagine that your school to is going to close, ending your only hope for an education. This is the reality for the school in our focus community.

The power of education:
Increases Income
In developing countries, every additional year of education can increase a person’s future income by 10 percent. (UNESCO) |
Reduces Poverty
If all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty – a 12% cut in world poverty. (UNESCO) |
Reduces Child Marriage
If all girls had secondary education, child marriage would drop by 64%. (UNESCO) |
Fitsum lives with her mother, Emebet, and two of her six siblings in a one-room mud hut. During the heavy rains, the family covers themselves with animal skins to protect them from the rain that seeps in through their thatched roof. Emebet works hard to provide for the family, earning $2.45 per week. At the age of 14, she was forced to marry, and began having children at 15. When asked about her dreams for her children, Emebet says,
“My dream is that they would be educated. I am suffering through life because I am illiterate. If I had been educated, I would not have been married so young. I want my children to have a better life than me.”

The primary school in our focus community was established in 2005 with the intention of providing education for destitute children in the community.
Located in a beautiful valley, students walk for 20 minutes to an hour to reach the school, some crossing two rivers along the way. It is the only school providing education for grades 5-8 in the broader geographic area. Without student textbooks and teacher guides, students are struggling to pass the critical 8th grade exam required for entrance into high school. Though there’s much work to be done, we have a vision for a thriving school, where students are nourished, educated, and enriched. |
Sidise teaches Math and Science to 42 third graders. She has dreamed of being a teacher since she was a young girl. She always loved to learn and uses that same love to teach her students. Her greatest desire is to teach those who don't have the opportunity to be taught. Even though she has to walk one hour each way to the school, she says,
"I love the kids like they are my own. I am always happy when I come to the school. I approach them with love. My goal is to teach them. I hope that they will learn from me and will know that they are capable and able to succeed in life. If the school wasn’t there, I could always teach at another school, but it would be devastating for the community. They wouldn’t have the chance to be educated."
